an intelligent waste monitoring and analytics system designed to improve waste collection efficiency, reduce operational costs, and support the City of Cape Town’s vision for smarter, technology-driven service delivery.
The SmartBin AI system uses IoT enabled sensors installed inside public waste bins to provide real-time fill-level monitoring, automated alerts, live operational dashboards, and intelligent route optimization for waste collection vehicles.
This solution transforms waste management from a fixed-schedule model into a data-driven smart infrastructure system. The proposed solution involves equipping public waste bins with smart sensor modules capable of monitoring:
Bin fill levels
Overflow risk
Collection frequency
Bin location
Environmental conditions (optional)
The collected data is transmitted in real time to a centralized cloud dashboard accessible by municipal waste management teams.
