I oppose the installation of streetlights in Kommetjie due to their harmful effects on our local environment and wildlife. Kommetjie’s unique ecosystem, home to nocturnal species like owls, bats, and Cape clawless otters, would be severely disrupted by artificial lighting. Streetlights interfere with these animals’ natural behaviors, such as hunting, navigation, and reproduction. Additionally, our location near the Cape Peninsula National Park means preserving dark skies is essential for migratory bird species that rely on natural light cues. Light pollution would also diminish the stunning starry nights that are a hallmark of living in Kommetjie, eroding the area's natural beauty and tranquil character. Protecting this rare harmony between humans and nature is vital to maintaining what makes Kommetjie so special.
