From "Phase 2: Comment on the proposed installation of public street lights in Kommetjie"
Go to the project
I strongly oppose the plan to install streetlights in Kommetjie due to the harmful impact it would have on our environment and local wildlife. The area’s delicate ecosystem, which includes nocturnal animals like owls, bats, and Cape clawless otters, relies on natural darkness to function properly. Artificial lighting would disrupt their essential behaviors like hunting, navigation, and reproduction. Given our proximity to the Cape Peninsula National Park, maintaining dark skies is critical for migratory birds that use natural light to guide their journey. Additionally, light pollution would rob us of the beautiful starry skies that define Kommetjie, altering the peaceful, scenic character of the area. Protecting the harmony between nature and our community is key to preserving what makes Kommetjie truly unique.
