Community Sanitation & Resource Recovery Hub

This idea introduces a decentralized municipal sanitation model for the City of Cape Town. Instead of expanding the centralized sewer network into every informal settlement, it proposes community-scale hubs that treat wastewater locally, recover resources such as biogas, and manage greywater and stormwater. The model is designed to complement the City's existing R16.7 billion water and sanitation infrastructure programme by reducing demand on the bulk sewer network in informal settlements where conventional expansion is constrained by density, layout, and land tenure complexity.
