Consolidate all City Public Participation Notices

From "Resident Ideas (Jul '25 - Jun '26)"

Go to the project

The public participation system is lacking. Issues: The result is rarely if ever made known to the person who has taken the time to comment. We need closure and to know what the outcome is. Public participation notices appear in several different places in parts. There is no single place to go to where one could find everything that is open for public participation. This is frustrating and sometimes misleading. Public participation feels like a tick-box exercise because of the lack of transparency and outcomes. Possible solutions: Have a single page or website where you can find everything that is open to public participation. An example of it being misleading is where you have a drop-down tab for Have your Say on this page. On the main City website you also have a link to Have you Say. Both have property related items which are not the same but related. It would be simpler to access them all in one place. A commitment from the City to be transparent will build trust in communities. Publish the request/notice, as well as how many people interacted or commented, category, a summary of objections, and the interim (i.e. if after comments were received the item was revised) and the final outcome. The same process should be developed for C3 service requests. Sometimes it is self-explanatory but sometimes a short description of what was done would be helpful and alleviate a lot of frustration.

Very good point, as well as for urgent notices. Information overload is an issue so would be ideal to be able to filter by area or type of notice. If that site can be RSS enabled with categories, it would be possible to use any RSS reader on a phone or desktop PC to get the notices relevant to everyone. It's the type of thing that City's media department needs to workshop with citizens, because it is messy right now, and has not been considered from the citizen perspective. I'm actually using the Eskom Se Push app as it is the only way I can see notices relevant to my Ward (but ideally we should get this from the City directly).
