Comment on City of Cape Town 2025/26 Budget and Tariffs:
I am expressing concern over the City of Cape Town’s proposed 7.96% property rates increase and new fixed charges for water, sanitation, and city-wide cleaning based on property values, which disproportionately burden middle-income and pensioner households.
The lack of transparency in cross-subsidisation and the cleaning tariff’s fairness, particularly for Eskom-supplied areas. Suggestions include capping rates at inflation (4.4%), unlinking fixed charges from property values, expanding relief for higher-valued properties and pensioners, and providing a commercial tariff calculator.
City’s infrastructure goals but urges affordability and fairness, requesting further public engagement and legal review of the cleaning tariff. Submission details are provided, noting the comment period closed on May 2, 2025, with potential amendments open for comment from May 28 to June 13, 2025.
