Fully integrated cycle network

I support this draft road safety strategy and appreciate the effort being made to improve safety for all road users. However, I would like to highlight the critical importance of creating an integrated and fully planned pedestrian and cycling network as part of this strategy.

There are far to many occasions where pedestrians are left in vulnerable and dangerous situations because the pavement they were using suddenly ends, forcing them to walk on the side of busy roads or cross unsafe areas. This not only places people at risk, but also discourages walking and cycling as safe, sustainable forms of transport.

A truly effective road safety strategy should ensure continuous, accessible, and well-connected infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, rather than isolated sections that do not connect properly. Safe mobility should not only apply to motorists, but also to the many people who rely on walking, cycling, and public transport every day.

Investing in complete pedestrian pathways, protected cycle lanes, safe crossings, and better integration with public transport would significantly improve safety, accessibility, freedom of movement and overall quality of life within our communities.
