Pedestrian crossing at traffic lights
Problem: Pedestrians at risk from left-turning traffic
Most intersections with traffic lights include pedestrian crossings with a "green man" and flashing red lights to indicate when it's safe to cross. This is good. The problem, however, is that when the green man is showing, vehicles are still allowed to turn left, putting pedestrians at great risk. Pedestrians having to wait for the vehicles on the left to stop turning when their light turns red run the risk of being knocked down by oncoming traffic for whom the light has by now turned green.
Proposal: My appeal is that when the "green man" pedestrian light is on, that no vehicles be allowed to move.
Pedestrian safety at shopping malls
Problem: Shopping mall parking lots pose a hazard to pedestrian safety.
While most shopping mall parking areas do provide marked pedestrian crossings, these are insufficient and there is very limited space for pedestrians to walk, even between the mall and the parking spaces.
Proposal: I propose that small pavements or demarcated walking areas be provided between parking areas and around shopping malls.
