Risks to the Walking and Cycling Strategy

From "Comment on the City’s draft Walking and Cycling Strategy"

Risks to the Strategy:

I have studied the strategy document and it is great. I love the vision and strategy. The strategy document highlights all the wonderful benefits the Walking and Cycling Strategy will create. What I don’t see are the potential risks being addressed to this strategy once implemented. There is a fair amount of focus on places like The Netherlands and Denmark and how they have addressed their transport issues. I don’t think they have a violent minibus taxi industry like South Africa. This is a potential risk to the strategy.

Minibus Taxi Industry:

The commuter rail network, Traditional Bus Transit, MyCiti Bus Rapid Transit and Metered Taxis are all threats to the taxi industry. The taxi industry is a law unto themselves. They are violent and combative and we have seen how they violently respond to the above mentioned modes of transport that threaten their livelihood. The Walking and Cycling strategy is another threat to their business. This will take away more customers from them. How will they respond to this new walking and cycling strategy threat when implemented? Food for thought. The strategy document should include a “Risk Management” section.
