Aslam Clark1 month ago I am writing to submit my formal public comments regarding the planned upgrades to Voortrekker Road under Tender 072Q 2025/26.As the City of Cape Town looks to modernize this vital transport corridor, I would like to formally propose the integration of dedicated, protected infrastructure for e-bikes and Personal Electric Vehicles (PEVs), specifically covering the route starting from Kensington along Voortrekker Road through to the Cape Town CBD.To ensure this upgrade aligns with the City's forward-planning initiatives and the Cape Town Traffic Department's safety regulations, I request that the final design incorporates the following considerations:- Dedicated Micro-Mobility Lanes: Voortrekker Road is a high-volume corridor with heavy commercial and passenger vehicle traffic. To comply with local traffic safety standards, e-bikes and lower-speed electric vehicles should be physically separated from main traffic lanes to prevent conflicts and ensure rider safety.- Kensington to CBD Connectivity: A continuous, unobstructed lane starting from Kensington and running directly into the CBD will provide a viable, safe, and efficient route for daily commuters, reducing the pressure on existing public transport and private vehicle lanes.- Regulatory Alignment: Incorporating designated lanes now will proactively support the Traffic Department in managing the growing integration of legal, speed-capped electric personal vehicles on public roadways, establishing clear boundaries and safety protocols (such as appropriate signage and lane markings).- Future-Proofing Infrastructure: As the cost of commuting rises, eco-friendly alternatives like e-bikes and e-scooters are becoming primary modes of transport. Upgrading Voortrekker Road without accommodating this shift would be a missed opportunity for the City’s sustainable transport goals.Thank you for considering this proposal as part of the public comment process for Tender 072Q 2025/26.
