Greta engelbrecht4 months ago I want to raise a concern regarding the growing lack of accessible public ablution facilities within Cape Town, particularly affecting e-hailing drivers, taxi operators, courier services, and delivery riders. With the rapid expansion of app-based transport and delivery services, a significant number of workers now spend extended hours on the road. Unfortunately, the availability of public restroom facilities has not kept pace with this shift. Many shopping centres and private establishments restrict access to paying customers, leaving drivers with limited or no options to meet basic sanitary needs. This situation is increasingly resulting in individuals resorting to public spaces such as sidewalks, which raises concerns around public health, urban cleanliness, and personal dignity. I have also witnessed instances where drivers attempting to access facilities in shopping centres were denied entry and, in one case, physically removed. Such incidents highlight the urgency and sensitivity of the issue. I would like to propose that the City consider the following measures: * Expansion and maintenance of public ablution facilities in high-traffic areas, including transport hubs, commercial zones, and popular delivery routes. * Partnerships with private sector stakeholders (shopping centres, petrol stations, and restaurants) to allow controlled public access to restroom facilities. * Engagement with e-hailing and delivery companies to co-fund or support designated rest areas for drivers. * Development of clear guidelines to encourage humane and non-confrontational handling of access requests by private security personnel. * Exploration of a publicly accessible map or system indicating available restroom facilities for drivers and the general public. Addressing this issue would not only improve sanitation and public health outcomes but also uphold the dignity of thousands of workers who play a vital role in the city’s economy. I trust that the City will give this matter due consideration and would welcome any feedback on possible initiatives or plans already underway.
