Comment on the draft amendment report for the Sand and Langevlei project
We invite you to comment on the draft amendment report for the Sand and Langevlei Canals project.
About
The City’s Liveable Urban Waterways (LUW) Programme and associated waterway rehabilitation projects aim to transform our neglected waterways into safe and attractive bodies of water that have a healthy ecology and provide a positive impact to the surrounding communities.
The Sand and Langevlei Canals in Coniston Park, Retreat forms part of the LUW Programme. It is one of the five proposed projects in the Sand Catchment for returning the waterway to a more natural state through:
- Decanalising sections of the canals,
- Placement of additional waste interceptors, and
- Reinstating wetland areas.
This will improve the ecosystem functioning of the entire system. In addition, we will add value by creating an urban green space for the surrounding community.
The project falls within the Zandvlei Nature Reserve.
The City’s Catchment, Stormwater and, River Management Branch is applying for a Part 2 amendment application in terms of Regulation 31 of the EIA regulations, 2014 (as amended).
The purpose of the amendment application is to amend the scope of the valid Environmental Authorisation (EA) for the proposed rehabilitation of the Sand and Langevlei Canals Confluence, Coniston Park, Retreat. An EA was granted for the project, and the proposed amendment entails the relocation of the waste interceptor to a new location.
The proposed location for the waste interceptor is Erf 136064 located at 563 Military Road, Steenberg.
