Comment on the Proposed decommissioning of traffic Signals at Onverwacht and Michael Street Intersection, Strand

In response to many previous incidents of theft and vandalism, the Urban Mobility Directorate investigated the decommissioning of the traffic signals at the intersection of Onverwacht Road and Michael Street. It is proposed that the intersection be changed to a four-way stop.

We have been informed by many people that local motorists blatantly disobey the traffic signals in the area and instead use all intersections as a yield control, irrespective of whether there are traffic lights or not.

In addition, stolen/vandalised equipment continually needs replacement and therefore we recommend that the traffic signals be decommissioned and that the intersection revert to a four way stop.

Option 1: Decommissioning/Removal of traffic signals at the intersection of Onverwacht Road and Michael Street into a 4-way Stop Control

Option 2: No changes suggested (remain as it is)

In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, the public and interested parties or groups are given the opportunity to submit comments, recommendations or input to the municipality from 12 July 2026 to 12 August 2026
