Comment on the proposed renaming of Libra Road Park to Emaan Oosthuizen Memorial Park

The proposal to rename the park arises from the tragic and senseless shooting of seven-year-old Emaan Oosthuizen from Ocean View, who was killed while playing in the street adjacent to the park. 

Emaan’s death profoundly impacted the community, highlighting the urgent need to restore safety and accessibility to the park, previously dominated by gangs and deemed unsafe for children and families. 

Renaming the park to Emaan Oosthuizen Memorial Park would serve as a lasting tribute to her memory and the innocent life lost. It would also symbolise the community’s resilience and collective desire for peace, safety and healing.

In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you may submit comments in respect of the renaming proposal.
