Comment on the revised Draft Basic Assessment Report (DBAR) for the Sand and Langevlei Canals project
The City’s Liveable Urban Waterways (LUW) Programme and associated waterway rehabilitation projects aim to transform our neglected waterways into safe and attractive bodies of water that have a healthy ecology and provide a positive impact to the surrounding communities.
The Sand and Langevlei Canals in Coniston Park, Retreat forms part of the LUW Programme. It is one of the five proposed projects in the Sand Catchment for returning the waterway to a more natural state through:
- decanalising sections of the canals,
- placement of additional waste interceptors, and
- reinstating wetland areas.
This will improve the ecosystem functioning of the entire system. In addition, we will add value by creating an urban green space for the surrounding community.
The project falls within the Zandvlei Estuary Nature Reserve.
A basic assessment process was initiated at the end of September 2024, and we held an open house meeting on 10 October 2024 to present the findings of the basic assessment and associated specialist studies. The comments we received were assessed by the applicant in conjunction with the project team, and revisions were made to the current designs.
