Phase 2: Comment on the proposed installation of public street lights in Kommetjie
The City is proposing two options for Phase 2 of the Kommetjie public streetlights project, and we want to hear from you.
Comment Period: 17 January – 31 January 2025
Phases
Phase 2: Comment on the proposed installation of public street lights in Kommetjie
The City’s Public Lighting Development division deals with requests for lights on public roads or streets in Cape Town. We investigate the requests in terms of the City’s mandate to provide public lights, City policy, and lighting quality standards.
Historically, Kommetjie has generally not received residential road or streetlights due to the residents’ desire for Kommetjie to remain predominately unlit.
The department accepts that requirements change over time and that the City has to adapt where a need for change has been verified.
We are proposing one of the following two options:
1. NO. No more streetlights at this stage please: The existing lighting in Kommetjie should remain in place but all future lighting requests must obtain Subcouncil endorsement prior to the request being accepted. Wireless and Riverside roads should not be lit at this point and the three new lights erected recently should be removed.
OR
2. YES. More streetlights please: The City will assess residents’ requests for lighting as per the standard existing procedure. On approval the road or street in question will be lit.
Door-to-door survey
We will deploy our data collection team to conduct a door-to-door survey in the unlit areas of Kommetjie from 20 January - 31 January 2025.
In terms of section 17 of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, you can submit comments and recommendations to the municipality in respect of the public lights in Kommetjie.
