PROPOSED TIME-RESTRICTED ONE-WAY CONVERSION OF VARIOUS ROADS AROUND SUN VALLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL IN SUN VALLEY

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate invites residents, parents, and road users to comment on a proposal to introduce a time-restricted one-way system around Sun Valley Primary School from Coracle Street towards Brigantine Avenue. This proposal is designed to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and create a more organised road environment around Sun Valley Primary School, an area with many vulnerable road users during busy drop-off and pick-up times. By participating in this process, your insights and feedback can help shape a safer, more efficient neighbourhood for everyone

The proposal includes:

Implement a time-restricted one-way along Coracle Street, Barque Crescent, Schooner Road and Brigantine Avenue as indicated on the map

Thomas Pretorius4 weeks ago Most people already follow this 'one-way' and it is the few people that do not which cause the traffic to slow down or come to a halt.The residents suggesting the school just use a specific gate or entrance don't realize that all the gates are used and if the school were to only use one side/gate that would cause much worse congestion due to amount of people. The school has done this split well actually between the grades and gates and if everyone followed the one-way everything would flow more smoothly.

Diane Laas4 weeks ago I strongly support the proposed time restricted one way system around Sun Valley Primary School.The fact that the restriction applies only during the busy school drop off and collection periods is particularly important. It is a practical and proportionate solution that addresses the traffic and safety problems when they actually occur, without unnecessarily affecting access or traffic flow for the rest of the day.I also believe the proposal will benefit the surrounding residents, rather than negatively affect them. At present, congestion during school times can make it difficult for everyone to move through the area, including residents trying to access or leave their homes. A clear one way traffic flow should reduce congestion, confusion and vehicles trying to pass one another on narrow residential roads.Most importantly, it should create a safer environment for the many children walking to and from school, while also making school time traffic more orderly and predictable for parents, road users and residents.The time restricted approach strikes an excellent balance between improving safety and traffic flow around the school and preserving normal access to the neighbourhood outside the relatively short periods when congestion is at its worst.I strongly encourage the City to implement the proposal.

Eduan Basson4 weeks ago The infrastructure available makes this a no-brainer: the school can unfortunately not provide enough parking or an off-street route for drop-offs/pick-ups of scholars, and so the only option is for parents to park on the side of the road. The width of the streets being what it is, this means there is not enough space for two-directional traffic. Thus all road users are impacted when grid-locks and stand-offs occur, residents and school traffic alike. It's actually a win-win!

Emma Dargan4 weeks ago The suggestions in the proposal are good, and I am on board with implementing them. The parking lot on Coracle Road could benefit from better road markings to accommodate more cars. In the recent storm, the parking lot lost a few big trees, which was great, as those trees were blocking out 3/4 of the parking spaces. The school changed the gate release points recently, alleviating stress on the Coracle Road sports gate; some grades are now being moved to the lower gate on Corvette Road. I think making an embayment all along Corvette Avenue is a great idea. The grass area between the road and the school fence is plenty wide enough. Possibly put parking bays along the opposite side of the road too (for pickup hours) this would still allow cars to park and still have a flow land for traffic down the middle. The parking bay area on Brigiteen Ave (student gate 2) has such potential to expand further to accommodate more cars up to the corner of Corvette Ave. This land is empty - you could make a pickup spot here. The residents will surely object to this, but I think if it's only for a portion of the day and not a permanent restriction - its for the better.

Paige Altern4 weeks ago I agree with the implementation at the city council to make the road a one way during peak time traffic. As a parent and teacher at the school, I know the frustrations of getting stuck during peak time due to a car traveling down the opposite way of traffic. Some times the stubbornness of drivers cause such difficulties just because they don’t want to follow a school made rule, please please enforce this to be law during peak hours.

Definitely in favour of the proposal - having an enforceable one-way route at peak drop-off/pick-up times will go a long way towards smooth traffic flow in the area, which might also help mitigate the disturbance of the surrounding neighborhood.Parents are aware of the issue and attempt to follow the traffic guidance issued by the school, but those who are not aware of these guidelines (e-hailing drivers, casual road users) can cause traffic snarl-ups through no fault of their own. Effecting this by-law will allow appropriate signage to be posted that will help ALL road users around the school keep traffic flowing efficiently.

Megan Fairbrother4 weeks ago Reference 110262705 (Sun Valley Primary School Time Restricted Road Closures)I strongly support the proposed time restricted one way system around Sun Valley Primary School.I think along with this restriction there should be a "parking on the left side only" and pass on the right added to this rule during these times as the roads are narrow and cars need space to pass. Currently there are some who park both sides which makes it hard for bigger cars to pass safely. I would also like to suggest we add Corvette Road to this restriction as parents pick up from that side of the school as well. I strongly suggest that the City of Cape Town look at changing the pavement along that side of the school (Corvette Road) to parking bays (ie: like the drop and go system at the cape town airport). The pavement is wide enough to make a walk way along the fence line and add in parking bays. I believe the proposal will benefit the surrounding residents, rather than negatively affect them. At present, congestion during school times can make it difficult for everyone to move through the area, including residents trying to access or leave their homes. Edwin Fellows4 weeks ago As a parent who lives in close proximity to Sun Valley School and the streets included in the proposal, I am in full support of the proposed time-restricted one-way system during peak drop-off and collection times. I believe this will help alleviate traffic congestion and improve the overall flow of traffic around the school during these particularly busy periods. School transport minivans, along with some parents, currently contribute significantly to congestion when the one-way systems requested by the school are not followed during drop-off and collection. Having a formal, clearly implemented system in place should help reduce the time that traffic remains congested and allow vehicles to move through the area more efficiently. I appreciate that some residents living on the affected streets may have concerns or objections; however, I believe that if the proposal is considered from an overall community perspective, a properly managed one-way system will ultimately reduce congestion times and improve traffic flow for everyone during the peak periods.
